the chakoian fund

The Chakoian Cancer Wellness Fund at the Lifespan Cancer Institute makes a significant difference in the lives of current cancer patients by offering comprehensive support for their physical and nutritional well-being during treatment, ultimately enhancing their quality of life and overall health.

Improved Quality of Life: Patients often experience improved physical and emotional well-being, reduced treatment-related side effects, and enhanced energy levels, leading to an overall better quality of life.

Enhanced Treatment Tolerance: Maintaining physical fitness and proper nutrition can help patients better tolerate cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, potentially leading to more successful outcomes.

Emotional Support: Engagement in exercise and nutrition programs can provide patients with a sense of empowerment, reduce anxiety and depression, and foster a positive outlook on their cancer journey.

Reduced Healthcare Costs: By preventing or mitigating treatment-related complications and hospitalizations, the fund can help reduce the overall healthcare costs for patients and the healthcare system.

Stronger Survivorship: Promoting healthy habits during treatment can encourage long-term lifestyle changes, promoting better survivorship and reducing the risk of cancer recurrence.

Suzanne Tanner (CORE Instructor)

Breast Cancer and Stomach Cancer Survivor

As a 6 year breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand the importance of the care that is necessary to handle a cancer diagnosis. From oncology to surgeons to nurses, they are all integral in providing support, treatment and overall care.

When I was diagnosed with an aggressive stomach cancer in the Spring of 2022, I was referred to the Lifespan Cancer Institute at Rhode Island Hospital. From my first meeting with my Oncologist (Dr Safran), I knew I was in good hands.

My diagnosis was serious, and I was met with optimism, and encouragement that we could be successful. This same sentiment was shared by my surgeon (Dr Miner), and currently I am 4 weeks post op (I had a full gastrectomy), and am officially cancer free. The experience and care I received over the last few months gave me hope and strength to persevere. Everyone (including all my amazing nurses in the ICU) always treated me like a person, first and foremost, and I can’t thank them enough, as it can be easy to be treated as just a patient. I’m still in active treatment (and recovery), and still look to my oncology team to provide the information, support and care that is necessary to get me to this finish line. And they continue to do just that!
